Documenting Gender Apartheid
The project is an effort to record and share the lived experiences of women who have endured and resisted gender-based oppression. Through oral histories, a published book, and a documentary film, the project seeks to preserve these narratives and bring attention to the realities of gender apartheid. By amplifying voices often overlooked, we hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of systemic oppression and the ways in which women respond to it.
Project Components
Oral History Interviews
At the heart of this project lies an extensive oral history collection, capturing firsthand accounts from women who have lived under gender apartheid. These interviews provide a personal and nuanced insight into how restrictive structures shape daily life, the ways women navigate them, and the impact on their identities and relationships. Conducted with sensitivity and respect, these recordings ensure that these stories are not lost but remain as a historical record for future generations.
Book of Curated Histories
The second part of the project is a book that brings together selected narratives from the oral history collection, along with analytical essays and contextual discussions. This book offers a thoughtful and accessible way for a wider audience to engage with the stories and themes of gender apartheid. By weaving together personal testimonies with expert perspectives, it provides an account of how gender-based oppression operates and how women find ways to challenge and endure it.
Documentary Film
The final component of the project is a documentary film that brings these stories to life through visual storytelling. Combining interviews, archival material, and on-the-ground perspectives, the film aims to immerse viewers in the lived experiences of those affected by gender apartheid. The documentary will serve as a way to encourage reflection and discussion in academic, activist, and public spaces around the world.
