Building a Coalition to Raise Awareness of Gender Apartheid

Gender apartheid is one of the most pressing yet underreported human rights issues of our time. It systematically denies women their basic freedoms, silences their voices, and enforces discriminatory practices that persist across generations. To shed light on this grave injustice and bring it to the forefront of global attention, we are launching a project in January 2025 that aims to document and amplify the stories of women who have endured and survived gender apartheid.

A Collaborative Approach

We believe that addressing an issue as complex and deeply rooted as gender apartheid requires collaboration. No single organisation, initiative, or individual can tackle this challenge alone. That’s why we are seeking to build a coalition of people and organisations to combine skills, experiences, and resources in a unified effort to document this issue and bring it to the attention of a wider audience.

This coalition will bring together voices from diverse sectors, including:

  • Human Rights Advocates who have dedicated their work to gender equality and the fight for justice.
  • Cultural Institutions committed to preserving and sharing personal narratives.
  • Artists, Writers, and Filmmakers who can creatively and powerfully convey these stories to a global audience.
  • Academics and Researchers who can analyse and contextualise the issue of gender apartheid.
  • Advocacy Organisations that can connect these narratives to public discourse and policymaking.

Preserving Stories Before They Are Lost

Central to this initiative is the documentation of untold stories. Through in-depth, open-ended interviews, Iranian poet and writer Fatemeh Ekhtesari, who has personally experienced gender apartheid, will lead the effort to preserve the voices of women who have not yet had the opportunity to share their experiences. These stories will form the backbone of an oral history, a book, and a documentary film.

By preserving these personal narratives before they are lost to time, we aim to provide a platform for these women to speak about the injustices they have endured and the resilience they have shown in the face of systemic oppression.

Raising Awareness Through Collective Action

Through this coalition, we aim to amplify these voices and ensure they reach the audiences who need to hear them most—whether through public events, creative works, academic research, or advocacy campaigns. Together, we can spotlight the devastating impact of gender apartheid and galvanise action to combat it.

We recognise that raising awareness is not just about documenting the issue but also about connecting these stories to the wider conversation on human rights, gender equality, and freedom of expression. Our coalition seeks to influence public discourse, engage communities, and inform policymakers to inspire meaningful change.

Join the Coalition

If your organisation or initiative aligns with our goals, we invite you to join us in this collaborative effort. Your insights, expertise, and support could be instrumental in making this project as impactful as possible.

Let’s work together to bring attention to the issue of gender apartheid, support the women whose voices have been silenced, and create a world where freedom and equality are truly universal.
